This working paper by Deborah Duveskog gives an overview of the need for new thinking in agricultural extension practice in order for farmers to deal with current agricultural issues and the importance of stimulating critical thinking and collective action among farmers in a broader agricultural development perspective. The paper aims at showing the current trends in extension policy and how FFS fits into this. It explains some of the theoretical perspectives that provide the basis for learning in FFS and puts FFS into more of a broader educational empowerment perspective than purely agricultural extension. It also explains and justifies the importance of some of the learning tools applied in FFS such as experimentation, AESA, dialogue, skilled FFS facilitators etc.
